Animation

Animation has been making a buzz among all in this technological age. It is a quick display of systematically arranged images of 2-D or 3-D model positions in order to form an illusion of movement. Animation is an optical illusion of motion which can be formed and demonstrated in various ways. Most common methods of presenting animation are video program or motion picture. However, there exist many other forms of presenting animation.

Animation came into existence many years ago. It has developed a lot as modern technologies came from time to time. There are varieties of techniques which involves in animation. With each technique varying animation can be produced. Some of the animation techniques included in this traditional age of animation includes full animation, limited animation and rotoscoping.

Most of the animated films of the 20th century were the process of traditional animation. In this technique, individual frames of photographs are first drawn on a paper. In order to create illusion, each drawing was made different from each other before it. Then the animator’s drawings are photocopied on transparent sheets known as cels which are painted with colors as per wish on the opposite side of line drawings. Finally the characters cels are photographed one after another on picture films using a rostrum camera.

The process of traditional cel animations came to an end since the beginning of the 21st century. Now days, animators’ drawings are either scanned or directly drawn on computer. Development in technologies now make it is possible to color the drawings with the help of software programs. Stimulation of camera effects and movements are also being done with the help of software programs. A few examples of the traditionally animated films include Animal Farm (U.K, 1954), Pinocchio (U.S, 1940) and Akira (Japan, 1988). There were also a few traditional animated films produced taking the aid of computer technology which includes Les Triplettes de Belleville (2003), The Lion King (US, 1994) etc.

Besides the above discussed animation techniques, there are a few more.  Among the most common are drawn on film animation, pinscreen animation and paint on glass animation. In the animation technique of drawn on film, footage is being produced by forming the images directly on film stock. Where as in paint on glass animation technique animated films are produced by manipulating dry oil paints on the sheets of glass.
